"The beauty of the sculpture, the solemn stillness of the woods, disturbed only by the scrambling of monkeys, and the chattering of parrots, the desolation of the city, and the mystery hung over it, all created an interest higher, if possible, than I had ever felt among the ruins of the Old World." John L. Stephens, 1839, Copán's First Explorer. In his now classic work, Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan, published in 1841, Stephens first brought Copán to world attention. |

Constructed during the Mayan Classic Period 300-800 A.D. - Copan is considered a masterpiece of Mayan sculpture and architecture. The intricate stelae, The Great Plaza, The Hieroglyphic Stairway, Las Sepulturas residential site, were all abandoned for reasons yet unknown and the site reclaimed by the jungle, around year 1200. Today, a multinational team of Maya experts continue the explorations that John Stephens began.
